From 'Australia' by Edwin Carton Booth. Thomas Baines joined Augustus Gregory as official artist and storekeeper, in the expedition across northern Australia between 1855-1857 sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society to evaluate the northern area of Australia for suitability as a colonial settlement. The Baines River was named after him.
