Antique print relating to Australia

'An extraordinary animal, neither an opossum nor a kangaroo but having something of both' 'An excellent representation of Mr. O'Connell. His pouch, like that of the Opossum, is a place of refuge for his offspring when danger threatens them, and there we behold, securely nestling, the persons of Lord Glenelg, Mr. Spring Rice, and Lord John Russell. The meaning of his extensive tail cannot be misunderstood, inscribed as it is with the names of those Members who obtain then seats in the House of Commons solely by Mr. O'Connell's influence.' Ref : 'An illustrative key to the Political sketches of H.B.,from no. 1 to no. 600." Political caricature of Daniel O'Connell with Whig MPs Lord John Russell, Thomas Spring Rice and Henry George Grey, Viscount Howick, in his pouch. Lithographed by Ducote & Stevens. John Doyle (1797- 1868), known by the pen name H. B., was an Irish political cartoonist, caricaturist, painter and lithographer. Trimmed closely on the left hand side, trimming some of the printed border. Number in ink top right of sheet. Names of sitters written in ink below image. Ink stain on reverse which shows through very slightly. POA
