Huddart's (1741-1816) field was hydrography (the surveying and charting of bodies of water). He was with the East India Company for ten years, during which time he made charts of Sumatra and the Indian coast. He made his fortune from the manufacture of rope for the shipping industry. He is shown here holding compasses or dividers, used in mapmaking, with a globe on the desk beside him.
Trimmed just within platemark at top of the sheet. Slight foxing in title area.
