Line engraving from 'Villas of the Ancients Illustrated' by Robert Castell, published in 1728. Castell's work, dedicated to Lord Burlington, has Pliny the younger's descriptions of his villas at Tusculum and Laurentum, as well as material by other authors on the siting of villas. The engravings inspired early 18th architects to build their own Neo-Classical villas. Slight mark from previous mount (outside the platemark).
