Original antique print

Wood and Dawkins visited Palmyra in Syria in 1750-53. Wood produced a series of fine folio engravings (The Ruins of Palmyra, 1753) detailing their discoveries and the architecture of Palmyra. The sitters, James Dawkins (1722-1757) and Robert Wood (1716/17-1771) are dressed in classical drapes. The painting commemorates the important discovery of the Ruins of Palmyra, and the general interest in antiques at that time. The original oil is in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. Overall toning. Laid onto linen. Trimmed just within platemark.
