The back of the stage is lettered with 'Free Trade'; at centre left, a man dressed as a woman, in the character of Columbine (William Ewart Gladstone), dances with a man in the character of Harlequin, at centre right (Sir Robert Peel) in front of a paper on the floor lettered with 'Sliding scale', watched by an old man in the character of Pantaloon, standing at left (Duke of Wellington); a man in the character of the Clown standing at right with his hands in the pockets of his trousers (Sir James Graham); in background at left, a man walking away (Lord Russell). John Doyle (1797- 1868), known by the pen name H. B., was an Irish political cartoonist, caricaturist, painter and lithographer. Trimmed at top along printed border.
