Original George Cuitt etching, 1848

Lettered below the image with the title, and 'Drawn and Etched by G Cuitt, Chester, 1812'. Lettered 'Plate 63' top right. From 'Wanderings and Pencillings amongst the ruins of Olden Times', 1848, a compilation of Cuitt's etchings from the early 19th century. Cuitt was a draughtsman and etcher of old buildings especially castles and abbeys in Yorkshire, Chester and North Wales. He studied Piranesi's etchings of Rome and it is clear how much his style is influenced by Piranesi in subject matter and in the manner the ruins are covered with thick vegetation.
