Portrait of George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837), patron of art. On the death of his father when he was eleven Wyndham succeeded to vast ancestral property including Petworth House in Sussex, and a great art collection. In 1794, he sold his London house and moved the ancestral art collection to Petworth. It was constantly visited by artists, many of whom he kept in employment. He bought Old Masters and antique sculpture, as well as commissioning numerous landscapes, subject pictures, and portraits. Most famous as the patron of Turner and a host of British painters and sculptors, Egremont also stood out as an enlightened and philanthropic landowner and an innovative farmer. CONDITION : One faint crease top left, scattered foxing in the bottom margin, outside the platemark.
