"This view is taken on the south bank of the Hokitika River, a few miles above the town, on the opposite side to the Kanieri diggings, looking up the valley of the Hokitika.' Hokitika is on the West Coast of the South Island.
Charles Decimus Barraud (1822-1897), one of a family of English artists, migrated to New Zealand in 1849. A noted watercolourist, he was a founder and later president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.
