Depcits Hugo and Girardin supporting the election of Prince Louis to the Legislative. This way Hugo facilitated the upcoming seizure of power and proclamation of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as president on December 10, 1848. A month before, on November 4, 1848 a section in the Constitution had been changed, guaranteeing freedom of the press.

Honore Daumier (1808-1879), was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century.
