German India-laid lithograph. Facsimile signature below the image. Signed on the stone by the artist. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker OM, GCSI, CB, MD, FRS (1817 - 1911) was one of the greatest British botanists and explorers of the 19th century. Hooker was a founder of geographical botany, and Charles Darwin's closest friend. He was Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, for twenty years, in succession to his father, William Jackson Hooker, and was awarded the highest honours of British science. Amongst his publications were 'Flora Antarctica' (1844-47), 'Flora Novae-Zelandiae' (1851-53) and 'Flora Tasmaniae' (1853-59). Some very light foxing in the margins.
