Details

Depicts the Sewessissing, chief of the Iowa Indians. Charles Hamilton Smith (1776-1859), a soldier, artist, and natural historian, was born in East Flanders and studied at the Austrian Academy for Artillery and Engineers, after which he embarked on a career in the British army. Smith saw duty in the Napoleonic wars, and in 1816 was sent on a mission to the United States and Canada. From Griffith's 'The Animal Kingdom'. A little soiling at very edges of the sheet.
