Sir Tho Dyke Acland Bart Late Member of Parliament for the County of Devon'. Rare portrait engraving, published in Exeter by Cole & Carter, December 10, 1819. Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Bt (1787-1871)inherited the family estates when his father died in 1794. He was MP for Devonshire from 1812 to 1818 and again from 1820 to 1831. He then sat for North Devon for twenty years from 1837. He lived at Killerton in Devon, now a National Trust Property. In 1834 Acland bought the schooner 'The Lady of St Kilda'. He had the interior re-constructed for use as a yacht, cruising mainly in the Mediterranean. He named his yacht, the Lady of St. Kilda to commemorate a visit to St. Kilda by his wife, Lydia, in 1810. St. Kilda is a remote island in the Outer Hebrides. In 1840 he sold the ship to Jonathan Cundy Pope of Plymouth, who later sold shares to Nicholas Were and James Duck. The ship was again used as a trading vessel and sailed for Port Phillip in February 1841. The Lady of St. Kilda was frequently in Port Phillip from July 1841 onwards and was usually moored off our foreshore, which was soon known as 'the St. Kilda foreshore.' Thus St Kilda was named after Acland's ship and Acland St after Acland himself. William Owen (1769-1825) was an English portrait painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was appointed portrait painter to the Prince of Wales in 1810. Samuel William Reynolds (1773-1835)was one of the best painters and mezzotint engravers of the early nineteenth century, Reynolds studied art in London under Charles Howard Hodges and John Raphael Smith. Reynolds began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1797 and continued to show his work there until 1827. Reynolds was appointed portrait engraver to George III in 1820. Some remains of old glue on the reverse. Trimmed within platemark.
