William Crooke arrived in Tasmania in 1841. He was Assistant Surgeon at Hobart for three years and then commenced private practice. In 1857 he moved to Victoria. After successfully identifying an outbreak of small pox he was appointed public vaccinator. He was the first Australia medical practitioner who identified diseased milk as a factor in the production of diphtheria.
