William Russell, Lord Russell (1639-1683) was an English politician. He was a leading member of the Country Party, forerunners of the Whigs, who opposed the succession of James II during the reign of Charles II, ultimately resulting in his execution for treason .
From Houbraken's series of portrait engravings which he set within elaborate cartouches. They were published by Knapton originally C1740, this impression is c1820.
