Captain James Huddart FRS

Copper-line engraving. 1801. 215mm by 170mm (image). Huddart's (1741-1816) field was hydrography (the surveying and charting of bodies of water). He was with the East India Company for ten years, during which time he made charts of Sumatra and the Indian coast. He made his fortune from the manufacture of rope for the shipping industry. He is shown here holding compasses or dividers, used in mapmaking, with a globe on the desk beside him.
