Porto di Ripetta
Tinted lithograph. C1870. 250mm by 360mm (image) 345mm by 500mm (sheet). The Porto di Ripetta was a port in the city of Rome. It was situated on the banks of the River Tiber and was designed and built in 1704 by the Italian Baroque architect Alessandro Speech. From a French series titled 'Rome dans Sa Grandeur', circa 1870. Benoist was one of France's most gifted topographical artists of the 19th century, he was both a master lithographer and painter. He began his career in Paris and by 1836 he was exhibiting his views at the Paris Salons and continued to do so until 1879. As an original lithographic artist, Philippe Benoist specialized in exterior and interior views of many famous European buildings. CONDITION : Some light soiling and tiny foxing spots to the edges of the sheet. Light handling crease top right corner of the sheet. Three small breaks in the paper at the bottom of the sheet. Some light foxing on the back of the sheet. Item #2360
