Steel engraving. C1860. 120mm by 190mm (image) 180mm by 270mm (sheet). Taken from plate 19 from Robert Melville Grindlay's 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India'. Grindlay (1786-1877) was only 17 when he arrived in India in 1803. He served with the Bombay Native Infantry from 1804 to 1820 and during this period made a large collection of sketches and drawings.
The construction of the British Residency began in 1803 during the tenure of Resident Kirkpatrick and took five years to complete. Its architect was P Russell of the Royal Engineers. This is the south side of the building, facing the city and separated from it by the river Musi." Item #2384
