Vue Generale de la Ville de Venise (Venice)
Copper line engraving with original hand-colouring. C1770. 200mm by 360mm (platemark). Originally published in c1725, this edition c1770. Published in Paris by Daumont in the rue St. Martin. Daumont was a publisher of vues d'optique, wallpaper, popular prints, and playing-cards. These kind of perspective views (vues d’optique) became extremely popular in Europe in the second half of the 18th century. Publishers would use a zograscope, a device with a lens and mirror, to give an illusion of depth to hand coloured engravings. Very light crease.
