Willy Lott's House

'Willy Lott's House is situated on the edge of the river Stour, close to Flatford Mill; it is a principal object in many of Constable's pictures. Willy Lott, a farmer, was born and died in it, having passed a life of more than eighty years without having spent four whole days away from it. The figure on horseback was sketched from Constable's father'. From 'English Landscape Scenery', 1855. John Constable RA was an English Romantic landscape painter. He believed that imagination and emotion were an important part of artistic expression and so incorporated these tenets into his lush, idyllic scenes. Beginning in 1829, Constable worked closely with David Lucas to produce the mezzotints as a general survey of his work. Tiny spot in platemark. Item #3004
